iStock-1328062588Labor day marks the end of the summer and is a great way to celebrate the United States workforce with BBQs and vacations before the weather turns cold. While labor day has not always been relaxing, millions of Americans will enjoy their long weekend, and some will, unfortunately, have to keep working. Here are a few facts about Labor Day you might not know.

The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.

Five years later, Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.

Americans worked 12-hour days seven days a week during the 19th century.

Canada celebrated "Labour Day" before the United States.

More than 647,000 workers' lives have been saved since the Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted in 1970.

53% of Americans will travel on Labor Day weekend

36% of Americans will travel by car over the holiday weekend.

32% of Americans are traveling less due to rising fuel costs.
