It commemorates the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The day has become a symbol of resilience and resistance, as well as an excuse to enjoy traditional Mexican food and festivities! Here are some fun facts about Cinco de Mayo: -The Battle of Puebla was an unexpected victory for the Mexican army against over 6,000 French soldiers despite having fewer men and supplies. -It wasn't until 1867 that Mexico officially declared Cinco de Mayo a national holiday. -In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has come to be associated with celebrating Mexican-American culture, traditions, and identity. -The largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the US is held in Los Angeles and has been declared an official city holiday! -Cinco de Mayo celebrations often include traditional dances like Jarabe Tapatio (the Mexican Hat Dance), parades, mariachi bands, carnivals, fireworks, and more. In addition to traditional festivities, Cinco de Mayo can also be celebrated with creative activities. Whether you're enjoying a festive meal or planning an outdoor gathering, here are some ideas for adding some extra culture and fun to your celebration: -Create colorful paper flags and banners to decorate your space. -Organize a friendly taco eating contest – who can eat their tacos the fastest? -Set up a piñata filled with candy and prizes for kids (and adults!) to enjoy. -Play traditional Mexican music such as mariachi or bolero - it will add a lively atmosphere to your celebration. -Make traditional Mexican dishes and desserts such as tamales, arroz con leche, or flan.
