Memorial Day is so much more than a 3 day holiday weekend to be celebrated with get together’s and BBQs. While the festivities are fun, Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women that have sacrificed their lives for our country. Here are a few facts about Memorial Day that you may not have known.
Memorial Day Started During The Civil War
The civil war brought on unprecedented death for both sides of the war. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers were killed across the country and this led to commemorations of the dead that became tradition.
The Birthplace
Although many cities claim being the birthplace of Memorial Day, Waterloo, NY is the official town. They first celebrated Memorial Day in 1866.
Decoration Day
Memorial day used to be called Decoration Day. This was because graves were decorated with flags and flowers. Memorial Day was made official in 1967
Flag Customs
On Memorial Day it is custom to fly the flag at half-staff until noon, and then raise it up until sunset.
Last Monday
Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday in May. Although it didn’t used to be this way. Prior to 1971, the holiday was celebrated on May 30th.
