What does Labor Day mean to you? For many Labor Day marks the end of summer. Taking place the first Monday in September, It is often celebrated with parties and BBQ’s to commemorate the last summer holiday and “Free Day off”. Here are a few facts about Labor Day you may not have known:

  • The first Labor Day was celebrated September 5th, 1882 in New York City, NY. On this day more than 10,00 workers marched for labor rights.
  • Labor day originated to give workers a break from long hours and long days. This was established before labor unions were successful in fighting for 8 hour work days. Many workers worked 12+ hour days, 6 days a week.
  • Even though it’s a national holiday, not everyone gets the day off. Many stores and essential government offices are still open on Labor Day, meaning workers have to work.
  • May Day is a similar holiday celebrated worldwide instead of just the US, and takes place in May. Sometimes the two holidays are confused.
  • Labor Day is the second most dangerous holiday to drive in the U.S., following closely behind memorial day.
