When the initial battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain, and those who did were considered radical.  By the middle of the following year, however, many more colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in the bestselling pamphlet “Common Sense,” published by Thomas Paine in early 1776.”

Did you know it was actually on July 2, 1776, that the Declaration of Independence began? It started with a letter to Britain’s King George to explain why the Continental Congress voted to declare America’s independence.  It was on July 4, that the final wording of the declaration was agreed.”

Every 4th of July the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped – although not actually rung – 13 times in honor of the original 13 American colonies.”

Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on a "laptop," a kind of writing desk that could fit on one's lap.”

Did you know Thomas Jefferson changed the wording of the Declaration of Independence from "the pursuit of property" to "the pursuit of happiness"?”

Each year Americans light about 200 million pounds of fireworks! And most of them are imported from China – $247,100,000 worth.”

Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a Turkey. He said the bald eagle is a bird of bad moral character, the turkey is a more respectable bird. Luckily, he lost the vote.”

Jefferson's original draft of the declaration of independence was lost, and the one eventually signed is the "engrossed" document.”

Several countries have used the Declaration of Independence as a beacon in their own struggles for freedom. These countries include France, Greece, Poland, Russia, and many countries in South America.”

Eight of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were born in Britain.”
